Bhadra Fort

Description

Bhadra Fort is located on the east bank of the Sabarmati river. Sometimes it was also known as Arak Fort as described in Mirat-i-Ahmadi. Ahmad Shah made this fantastic fort I of the Muzaffarid dynasty. Ahmad Shah, I was that person behind whose name Ahmedabad was named. He also established Ahmedabad as the new capital of Gujarat Sultanate and built Bhadra Fort. Bandra Fort acquires an area of about forty-three acres, containing 162 houses, the Bhadra fort had eight gates, three large, two in the east and one in the south-west corner; three middle-sized, one in the south and two in the north and; and two small, in the west.

History

People are of the belief that, Goddess Lakshmi had once visited the Bhadra fort and blessed the Sultan that, his city would always remain prosperous. Since times immemorial, citizens of Ahmedabad have been wealthy, and infact, Ahmedabad has all through been the hub of trade and commerce in the state of Gujarat. Other than this architecture and awesome surrounding it has very interesting historical facts. Other than this it has a rich cultural diversity as many rulers ruled here even British ruled here and used this fort as a jail from 1817 till independence. There is one more story of glory that Sarsenapati Umabaisaheb Khanderao Dabhade became the only female Commander-in-Chief in the history of the Marathas in 1732. She ordered the Maratha Army and fought a war at Bhadra Fort which results in defeating Mughal Sardar Joravar Khan Babi.
